In my experience..

Like many things, competition has been commercialized and abused into a monster of an issue.  The roots of competition with opponents, resulting in high quality, fun and entertaining sport, where both the "winners" and the "losers" progress from the game, bout or match have been covered with layers upon layers of distraction (AKA bullshit).  Competition against where the "winners" feel superior and the "losers" are forced into inferiority creates yet another form of separatism among us.

How do you define a win?  A loss?  If a bullying fathers helps his sons' team to score more points while the other teams coach points out the productive lessons in technique, poise and creative control when they present themselves, which kids "win"?

The score will be forgotten almost immediately, and the score-seekers will have to do everything they can again and again to feel that short lived "success".  While the team that learned from the opportunities and thus understand the principles of True success will advance as humans efficiently.

Competition is one of the greatest drivers on the planet.  Utilize it from Love and understanding and the results are amazing.
